What Families have to say about Letterjoy
"We did the Letterjoy thing as a Christmas gift for our son, and I’m definitely the biggest beneficiary. I read them aloud to the whole family, in the accent/voice I imagine each author would have had. "
— Stephanie, NY (Via Twitter)
"We read the weekly historic letter as a family. I recommend anyone who loves history and any homeschoolers get these"
— Branden, KY
"My 12 year old history obsessed son loved it. It’s not just the letter- it’s the info that comes with it. My son is on Scholar Bowl and he sees these as a treasure trove of info."
— Jennifer, FL (Via Twitter)
The Letterjoy Experience
Enjoy weekly (snail) mail from historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, Clara Barton, and George S. Patton.
Each week, you’ll receive one reproduction of a real letter, telegram, petition, or memorandum from American history.
Each month, your letters will explore a monthly theme from four angles. Past monthly themes include Civil War Innovation, Supreme Court Battles, The Rise of Steel, and President & The Press.
Over the course of your membership, you’ll explore a variety of historical periods and events through the words of the leaders and innovators who lived through them.
Real Historical Letters
Enjoying Letterjoy requires no screens, wifi, or battery. Each of your letters is mailed to your door with a real postage stamp, and printed on fine stationery, vellum, or parchment.
It’s a screenless experience that iPhones can't match.
Screenless & Fun
Every Letterjoy letter also comes with a “postscript” article, giving you all the context you’ll need to enjoy your latest missive.
Each postscript is written by our expert curators and teeming with interesting historical facts that will make you a force to be reckoned with at your next trivia night.

Yes. The historical letters we share are reproductions of real letters, telegrams, memorandums, or petitions from American history.
We source our letters from some of the finest archives, special collections, and private sources on the planet.
For more information on sourcing, and the philosophical debate over what constitutes authenticity (and our stance on it), reach out to Support[at]letterjoy[dot]co.
-
Every letter is also accompanied by a carefully researched “postscript” section which explains the context in which the letter was written, who the author and recipient were, and how the contents of the letter relate to other events throughout history.
-
Of course! Our samples page has high-resolution PDF scans of a few of the letters we’ve recently mailed and summaries of the monthly themes they were mailed for.
-
We don’t have a formal age recommendation because we know that every family has their own standard for what’s appropriate in their household.
We have readers of all ages, from nine to ninety-nine, but our letters do touch on mature topics such as war and crime and do sometimes include limited amounts of strong language.
Letterjoy letters are used in classrooms throughout the United States.
-
Our primary focus is on American history from 1600-1960, but we cover a broad array of subjects within that time frame. Here are some past monthly themes:

The Birth of Aviation: Four powerful letters from the 30-year period where powered flight went from a dream to an affordable mode of transportation.
The Right to Vote: From the American Revolution to the 26th Amendment.
Judicial Challenges: Examine some of history’s most intense inter-branch battles, from the era of George Washington to the era of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Civil War Spies: First-hand accounts of the dangerous life of espionage during the American Civil War.
American Expansion: The manifestation of “Manifest Destiny”. The real stories behind the Louisiana Purchase, the Republic of Texas, Hawaiian Annexation, and the Pig War.
