Editor's Note: A Presidential Switcheroo

Dear readers,

As a few of you have pointed out to us, there was an error in the postscript of the 4th letter in our series on the American response to the rise of Nazism.

The passage in question read:

“That summer, the newly formed “Emergency Committee to Save the Jews of Europe” held a mass meeting in New York. Luminaries involved with the group included publisher William Randolph Hearst and former President Woodrow Wilson.”

As you probably know, by the time of this meeting, Wilson had been long dead. This was meant to read:

That summer, the newly formed “Emergency Committee to Save the Jews of Europe” held a mass meeting in New York. Luminaries involved with the group included publisher William Randolph Hearst and former President Herbert Hoover.

As we were making last-minute revisions to this postscript, I revised this sentence, and as my mind had been on another letter, by Wilson, I wrote in the wrong president and we failed to catch the mistake in our final readthrough.

I apologize for the error. Future versions of this postscript will include the correct president.
